In my last blog, I shared how choosing Austrian Power Grid AG over a higher-paying offer wasn’t about the money but the job itself. I knew the role as a Network Engineer for the OT (Operational Technology) Network would offer the challenge I was looking for, even if it came with a bit of uncertainty. The position was a 1-year contract, and I wasn’t hired directly by Austrian Power Grid AG but through a third-party personnel company. Still, I had no doubts that this was the right path for me.
Starting the Journey: Training and Learning in a Critical Environment
From day one, I knew this was no ordinary role. Working on a power grid isn’t something you learn by trial and error—it’s far too critical for that. Our tools and systems gave us such access and control over the grid that a misstep could have been disastrous. The weight of the responsibility wasn’t lost on me.
To get me up to speed, I went through several rounds of training. It wasn’t just a matter of learning how to use the tools, but also understanding the systems that power our grid and how to protect them. I spent a lot of time observing and learning from senior colleagues who had years of experience. Their guidance was invaluable in preparing me for the job ahead.
Proving My Skills: The Make-or-Break Interview
After months of intense learning and hands-on experience under close supervision, it was time to prove I was ready. I had a formal interview with my manager, where they tested my knowledge of the OT Network and assessed whether I could be trusted to work independently. There was no room for error here—after all, it’s our power grid at stake!
Luckily, I passed with flying colors. As a reward for my hard work and the skills I had acquired, I received a significant salary increase and, best of all, a full-time contract directly with Austrian Power Grid AG. I had finally made it! What began as a one-year temporary position had evolved into a long-term opportunity, and it felt incredibly satisfying to have earned it.
Reflecting on the Decision: It Paid Off
Looking back, it’s clear that my decision to choose the lesser money and security initially was the right one. It wasn’t about playing it safe; it was about taking a chance on something that I knew I would enjoy and excel at. In the end, that decision paid off, and I’ve now secured both a higher salary and long-term job security in a role I’m passionate about.
Sometimes, the best career decisions aren’t the ones that offer instant gratification but the ones that align with your skills, interests, and long-term goals. This experience reaffirmed my belief that if you trust your instincts and focus on what excites you, the rewards will follow.
Next Chapter: What Came After
In my next blog, I’ll dive into my second station at Austrian Power Grid AG, where I continued to grow and take on even more exciting challenges. Stay tuned!
