In my last blog post, I shared how I started at Austrian Power Grid AG as a Network Engineer. As I stepped into this role, my responsibilities were extensive, covering the entire lifecycle of the components used for long-distance communication. From planning to commissioning to servicing, I was hands-on every step of the way. Each task gave me deeper insights into how critical communication infrastructures are built, maintained, and optimized within a high-stakes environment like the power grid.
However, my journey didn’t stop there.
Stepping Into Cybersecurity
As I immersed myself in networking, I realized there was a growing need for cybersecurity expertise in Operational Technology (OT). After all, power grids are a prime target for cyber threats, and securing the network was just as important as keeping it running smoothly. This is when I decided to dive deeper into cybersecurity, and I needed something to back up my knowledge.
That’s when I went for the CCNA Security certification. It was the first step in formalizing my cybersecurity knowledge, giving me the confidence and foundational skills to navigate the vast cybersecurity landscape. But the most exciting part was that this certification wasn’t just a piece of paper—it was a gateway to my next role.
Landing My First Full-Time Cybersecurity Role: OT Security Specialist
With the CCNA Security certification in hand, I was able to make the leap into my first full-time cybersecurity position. Austrian Power Grid AG offered me the role of OT Security Specialist, marking a major milestone in my career. This was my “YAAYYYY” moment—finally, I had arrived where I wanted to be.
The role allowed me to apply my technical knowledge of networking while diving head-first into securing the OT network. It was a perfect blend of my passion for networking and my growing expertise in cybersecurity.
Whats Next?
As I continued to build my career in OT Security, I found myself tackling new and exciting challenges. From defending critical infrastructure against sophisticated cyber threats to ensuring compliance with strict security standards, this role opened up a whole new world for me.
In my upcoming post, I’ll dive deeper into the specifics of being an OT Security Specialist, including how I approached incident response, vulnerability management, and the critical importance of securing Operational Technology networks in industries like energy. There’s a lot to unpack, and I’m excited to share these insights with you.
