After my transition from Network Engineer to OT Security Specialist, I finally landed my first full-time security job. It was a pivotal moment in my career and a dream come true to take on the responsibility of ensuring the security of the entire OT control systems.
Overcoming Challenges in OT Security
Being at the helm of OT security came with its own set of incredible challenges. I quickly learned that securing critical infrastructure was no small task. Every day presented unique opportunities to identify vulnerabilities, assess risks, and implement robust security measures to protect the integrity of the control systems.
Solving Security Issues, One Step at a Time
One of the most fulfilling aspects of the role was tackling the multitude of small yet significant security issues that arose. Each issue demanded a meticulous approach—whether it was fine-tuning firewalls, conducting regular vulnerability assessments, or enhancing the system’s monitoring capabilities. The goal was always clear: to fortify the OT environment against potential threats while ensuring its seamless operation.
Gaining Invaluable Experience
Through this role, I gained invaluable experience in incident response, access control management, and security audits. I collaborated closely with cross-functional teams to address security gaps and ensure compliance with industry standards. It was challenging but rewarding to be part of a team that shared a commitment to safeguarding the infrastructure that powers our modern world.
A Solid Foundation for the Future
This chapter of my journey solidified my passion for cybersecurity. It also laid the groundwork for my future endeavors, equipping me with the knowledge and expertise required to tackle even more complex security challenges. The lessons I learned and the skills I honed during this period became the foundation for the next steps in my career.
What’s Next?
As I continued to grow in the cybersecurity domain, an exciting opportunity came my way: landing a position at Cisco. In my next blog, I will delve into this transition, sharing how I secured the role and what it meant for my career in cybersecurity.
