After my brief stint at Vienna Airport as a Project Manager, I found myself in a situation that felt like stepping into quicksand. The role was far from what I had envisioned, and it was clear I needed to make a quick exit. Fortunately, I had two incredible offers waiting for me: one from Austrian Power Grid AG and the other from Frequentis. Each company presented a unique opportunity, and this time, I was determined to make the right choice.
Two Great Offers, One Tough Decision
Frequentis, a leader in communication and information systems for safety-critical industries, was closely aligned with my previous experience at ABB AG. The role felt like a continuation of the work I had been doing, with a focus on operations and systems integration. Their offer was financially compelling, and on the surface, it seemed like a logical next step.
Austrian Power Grid AG, however, offered something different. The role was centered around managing complex IT networks and Operational Technology (OT) Networks—an area that sparked a deep interest in IT systems during my time at ABB AG. This was an opportunity to dive deeper into a field that intrigued me, even though the financial package wasn’t as strong as the one from Frequentis.
Lessons from Vienna Airport: Prioritizing Passion Over Money
Having just left a role at Vienna Airport that wasn’t aligned with my interests, I knew that chasing money alone wasn’t the answer. The experience taught me that job satisfaction and long-term growth are far more important than a paycheck. With that in mind, I chose Austrian Power Grid AG, even though Frequentis offered more money. In hindsight, this was the best decision I could have made.
Why I Chose Austrian Power Grid AG
Here’s what tipped the scales in favor of Austrian Power Grid AG
-
Passion for IT Networks
My time at ABB AG had sparked a strong interest in IT systems, and the role at Austrian Power Grid AG would allow me to dive deep into that space, managing the intricate IT and OT networks that power critical infrastructure. This was a field where I could grow and make a real impact.
-
Long-Term Career Fit
While Frequentis was a great opportunity, Austrian Power Grid AG aligned more closely with my evolving interests. I saw this as a chance to expand my skill set in a meaningful way and take on challenges that would push me forward.
-
Learning from Past Experiences
The experience at Vienna Airport taught me that job satisfaction and alignment with personal interests are key. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice. Austrian Power Grid AG’s offer might have been lower financially, but it promised the growth and satisfaction I was looking for.
Looking Ahead
Choosing Austrian Power Grid AG over Frequentis, despite the lower salary, turned out to be the best decision of my career. It allowed me to follow my passion for IT networks and step into a role that was more aligned with my long-term goals.
