Navigating Career Choices: My Experience at Vienna Airport

After spending some time at ABB AG, where I worked on bridging operational technology (OT), IoT, and engineering expertise, the work environment started to deteriorate. With many colleagues leaving, fewer projects coming in, and no visible growth opportunities, I knew it was time for a change. When a new opportunity arose, I decided to take the plunge.

The Move to Vienna Airport

I accepted a role at Vienna Airport as a Project Manager, tasked with planning and managing the costs for electrical wiring and the setup of restaurants and offices. It sounded like an exciting challenge, a way to broaden my skill set. However, as the weeks went by, it became clear that this was not the right fit for me. My interests lie more in technology and systems integration, rather than managing commercial setups. After three months, I made the decision to leave, knowing this wasn’t the path I wanted to pursue.

Key Lessons Learned

Although my time at Vienna Airport was short, it taught me some important lessons

  • Don’t Be Swayed by Job Titles

It’s easy to be drawn in by an impressive job title, but it’s essential to understand the actual responsibilities and long-term potential of a role.

  • Ask Tough Questions During Interviews

Sometimes the job description or interview paints a picture that’s too good to be true. I’ve learned the importance of digging deep and asking tough questions to get an accurate sense of the role.

  • Build Resilience

Not every job will be a perfect match, but each one will offer valuable lessons. My time at Vienna Airport made me more adaptable and resilient in my career.

Moving Forward

Though my time at Vienna Airport wasn’t what I had hoped, it led me to a more informed and thoughtful approach in my next career move. After leaving, I found myself with two promising offers: one from Austrian Power Grid AG and another from Frequentis. This time, I took a much deeper look at both opportunities before making a decision.

I’ll share more about this decision-making process and my next steps in my upcoming blog post.
