ABB AG: Bridging OT, IoT, and Engineering Expertise

Welcome to a deeper exploration of my transformative journey within ABB AG, where my role as an Electrical Engineer bridged the dynamic worlds of Operational Technology (OT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) (missed the last Blog?). This blog unveils the challenges, triumphs, and profound lessons learned over 5 1/2 years, highlighting how ABB AG served as a pivotal arena for my professional growth and curiosity in engineering innovation.

The Fascination with OT/IoT at ABB AG

During my time at ABB AG, I found myself deeply engrossed in the world of OT/IoT. The seamless integration and alignment required in industrial plants, factories, and power plants were nothing short of fascinating. The processes behind production lines and the meticulous planning involved in ensuring everything worked in harmony piqued my curiosity and drove my passion for the field.

Mastering Eplan and Embracing Automation in Engineering

One of the highlights of my role was the opportunity to use CAE software for drawing circuit diagrams, with Eplan becoming my tool of choice. Its comprehensive set of features and integrated automation processes made it an indispensable part of my toolkit. My enthusiasm for Eplan was evident, as I quickly became known as the expert in utilizing this software within my team. The ability to streamline the planning phase and enhance the efficiency of our projects through Eplan was incredibly rewarding.

On-Site Commissioning: Where Plans Come to Life

The transition from planning to on-site commissioning was always exhilarating. Witnessing the switchgears and automation systems, from low to mid-voltage, come to life in various settings was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. These moments were not only milestones in each project but also pivotal points in my professional growth, offering hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the complexities of electrical engineering in industrial applications.

Professional Growth and Key Takeaways

Reflecting on my 5 1/2 years at ABB AG, it’s clear that this experience was more than just a job; it was a foundational chapter in my career. The challenges I faced, particularly in the early days, were daunting yet instrumental in shaping my skills and approach to problem-solving. The journey taught me the importance of perseverance, continuous learning, and the value of embracing technology to achieve excellence in engineering.

Looking Ahead

As I transition from my chapter at ABB AG, the insights from OT and IoT continue to resonate with me, even now at Cisco. My journey into IT, sparked by a blend of hobby and necessity, proved that no knowledge is ever wasted. This foundation is still invaluable today, underscoring the unpredictable paths our careers can take.

In upcoming blogs, I’ll share how these initial explorations, seemingly small at the time, have become central to my work. Stay tuned for more on how every piece of knowledge has its moment to shine.
